We’ve been trying to have a high power launch all year and have been thwarted by the weather, but we will try again this Saturday from 10AM-5PM (and Sunday, too) at the Sod Farm in Lilly, GA. We still may have to dodge some raindrops, but for the most part the days will be sunny with temperatures in the mid 70′s to low 80′s and the winds will be mild, mostly from the southwest. The latest updates suggest that you get the bulk of your Saturday flying done before 2 or 3PM. Sunday may be a bit wetter than originally expected.

There’s a 5000 ft waiver as usual, and plenty of room for big and small rockets. Chris Short of Chris’ Rocket Supply will be there with plenty of motors, both large and small.

We hope to see you there!

The weather has it in for us this year, and this weekend’s launch is now no exception. We’re sad to announce that we are cancelling the launch scheduled for this weekend at Atlanta Dragway.

For all the last week the National Weather Service and other sources have been predicting likely rain and thunder in the area for the whole weekend with a 60% chance Saturday and 70% on Sunday.

Due to scheduling conflicts with the drag racing season, our next chance for a launch at the Atlanta Dragway will be late summer.

We’ll try again for another high power launch on May 18-19 in Lilly, GA. Don’t forget our low power launches in Alpharetta on the second Saturday of each month, and Southern Thunder coming up in June in Manchester, Tennessee.

This weekend, SoAR will host a two-day rocket launch at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA. Flying will go from 10AM to 5PM on both Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28. The launch will feature all types of model rockets from low to high power, with a FAA waiver for high power rockets up to 4000 ft.

Everett Stowe has announced that he will fly his 1/25th scale Saturn V at this launch. For those of you who haven’t seen Everett’s Saturn, it is somewhere around 14 feet tall and is a museum quality build. This flight in itself is worth the trip to the Dragway.

Good weather seems to be in store for the March Mill Springs launch coming up today from Noon to 5PM. Temperatures will be in the low 60′s and winds will be about 7MPH out of the sputh-southeast. As always, everyone is welcome to the Mill Springs Academy to watch or fly. Keep in mind this is our smallest field. You’ll generally want to keep the power down to D motors and below if you want your rockets back.

The FAA has approved our request for a waiver at the Atlanta Dragway. This means that the launch on April 27/28 will allow Class 2 rockets to fly up to 4,000 ft.

We will probably go over-the-top on this launch (grilled animal protein, chips, soda…you know the drill). If you’d like to cook and/or can bring “stuff” please let us know.

Everett Stowe has announced that he will fly his 1/25 Saturn V at this launch. For those of you who haven’t seen Everett’s Saturn, it is somewhere around 14 feet tall and is a museum quality build. This flight in itself is worth the trip to the Dragway.

Hey Y’all,

Remember Valentine’s Day? That was when we were going to have our scheduled RocketTalk Meeting…but romance won over rocketry!

This Thursday night (02/28) SoAR will at last have it’s February meeting from 7-10pm at the Tuxford Subdivision Clubhouse, 10800 Windham Way, which is just off of Kimball Bridge Road, midway between North Point Parkway and Old Milton/State Bridge Roads in Alpharetta.

Is there some aspect of rocketry that you want to go over? FAA regulations, NFPA guidelines, you know, boring minutia???? Not!

Seriously, we’ve got enough experts that pretty much any aspect of rocketry can be covered, but we need to know what YOU want. Give us some suggestions and we’ll do our best to get your topic covered!

See you all Thursday at 7:00 PM!

On Saturday, February 9th SoAR partnered with the Tellus Science Museum to provide a Build-it/Fly-it for Tellus Museum guests and to hold a SuperRoc Contest.

The Build-it/Fly-it was a overwhelming success with over 120 children and their parents being introduced to rocketry.

Many thanks to Tim Callahan who oversaw the classroom work, and to Jeff Coons and Glenn Harper who kept the launch running!

Many thanks to the Tellus volunteers for running the altitude measuring equipment (they kept it fair).

The SuperRoc contest drew five contestants:

More contests to follow! Many thanks to all the participants!

For those of you who just tuned in, the SuperRoc contest required a rocket to be as long as possible and to come as close as possible to 250 feet. The contestants were required to use an “A” impulse motor. We had both 13mm and 18mm designs.

This Saturday’s launch will be run cooperatively with the Northwest Georgia Science Museum – Tellus. SoAR will be building rockets with young and old rocketeers and then give those same builders a chance to fly their rockets.

There is a one-hour build every hour starting at 10:00 AM with three full build sessions anticipated. After each build session, the “builders” visit the museum for an hour and then come back to fly their rockets. We can certainly use experienced builders in the classroom to help with the build!

In addition to the build-it/fly-it, SoAR members are invited to participate in a SuperRoc Altitude prediction contest. The winning entry takes home an Apogee Saturn 1B model valued at over $200.00. HobbyTown USA Kennesaw has all the building materials you might need. Please contact Jorge with questions.

Let’s make sure that everyone is on the same page concerning the launch restrictions in place for this launch. The most powerful engine allowed at Tellus is the A10-3T, A3-4T or A8-3,5 engines from Estes and Quest (2.5 N-Sec impulse). This restriction is in place to protect the museum from a possible lawsuit arising out of a rocket landing on/near I-75 and causing an accident.

Now, if you need to burn more powerful engines join SoAR at the field in Lilly/Byromville, GA on February 23rd. At Lilly, the only limitations are that the motor must be certified and the rocket’s altitude must not exceed 5,000 ft. SoAR anticipates having a new field in the Pineview area with a waiver to 9,000 ft by late spring…..we’ll keep you posted. Ok, Ok, you also cannot fly a rocket with more than 40,960 N-Sec installed. Honestly, can any of us afford a Cessaroni “O”?

In any case, come on out next Saturday (02/09) and heckle the SuperRoc contestants and maybe take a turn running LCO/RSO.

A year or so ago we announced a contest for people to build and fly a rocket based on the yellow rocket in the SoAR logo. The one built by Steve Corrigall was by far the best, but we never got around to awarding the prize. So, Steve has won a rocket kit worth up to $35 from Roy’s collection of kits (which is still pretty large, though getting smaller). Congratulations Steve!

After the vote, the RocketTalk portion begins. Bring stuff to show, get expert advice, learn new techniques, see some really cool rockets, and hang out with the second most nerdy group of people in Georgia!

The launch should be on the main, long field, but if lacrosse is going on, keep going down the road to your left and park near the entrance to the Track field. Due to the size of the fields at Mill Springs, we recommend a maximum power level of D motors.

Should be a nice day, with temps in the 60′s, and a light wind from the southwest. A perfect day to come out and enjoy some model rocket launches.

We will be conducting another SoAR fundraiser auction. This time it’s balsa sheet mania!

David Tripp has generously donated hundreds of sheets of 1/8″ thick x 3″ wide balsa. Most sheets are 48″ long, some are 36″ long. There is also some 1/2″ square, 36″ long balsa stock. Plus a few odds and ends.

If you have anything you would like to donate to the auction tonight, please bring it. Thanks!

See you there!
